The Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra begins a new season with an afternoon of Russian music, whisking us away to the alluring sounds of the Arabian Nights. The concert will begin with the music that inspired the 1954 Tony Award winning musical Kismet and conclude with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. The program is on Saturday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. and is located at the Rhinebeck High School Auditorium in Rhinebeck, NY.
Scheherazade, a popular work by Rimsky-Korsakov, is named after the character Shahrazad from One Thousand and One Nights. It was written to produce a sensation of fantasy narratives from the Orient. The musical Kismet was adapted from the music of Alexander Borodin for its exotic flavor and lush melodies. Joining the orchestra to sing are two local choirs: Ars Choralis and Classic Choral Society. Barbara Pickhardt, the music director of Ars Choralis says, “We are grateful to conductor Kathleen Beckmann for the opportunity to perform with NDSO. We look forward to joining voices with members of the Classic Chorale to sing Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor and Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from the opera Nabucco.” Tickets for the concert are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $5 for students.
