About the program
Travel back to the silent film era with a captivating performance featuring a theater organ alongside the orchestra for a screening of Buster Keaton’s masterpiece movie One Week. The organ will bring the comedy to life with lively music and quirky sound effects like car horns, train whistles, and more.
The program also features Michael Daugherty’s powerful organ concerto, Once Upon a Castle, inspired by Hearst Castle and classic Hollywood grandeur.
Guest artist Carl Hackert will perform on the mighty organ, provided by the New York Theater Organ Society.

Pre-concert Talk "Silent films: the important role of the organist"
Come early for a pre concert talk and meet our soloist Carl Hackert as he demonstrates the inner workings of the theater organ. He will discuss the history of Silent Films and the improvisational techniques used to accompany them. You will be amazed at all the sounds available at his fingertips (and at his toes!)

carl hackert, guest organistCarl E. Hackert is a graduate of the Crane School of Music having majored in music education and composition with Dr. Robert Washburn and Elliot DelBorgo. His organ teachers have included Robert Frederick, Allen Mills, Dr. William Maul, James Autenrith, Dr. Brian Jackson and Hugh Allen Wilson at Union College. He is a retired Allen Organ Company dealer having installed approximately 400 Allen organs during his 40 year career and has served as a church music director and organist for a variety of denominations for 50 years. He was harpsichordist and pianist with the Ethos Chamber Music Ensemble for 13 years.
He has performed on organ, piano, celesta and harpsichord with the symphony orchestras of Albany, Schenectady, Glens Falls and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. As a theater organist he performs concerts and silent films at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady and he has appeared at other regional theater organ venues including the Bardavon Opera House, the Middletown Paramount, Rome's Capitol Theater, the Round Lake Auditorium and the Stissing Center. |
