NDSO opens the season with The Overture to the Magic Flute. Marcia Gates, principal flute with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, joins NDSO for Mozart’s Concerto in G Major. Beethoven’s extraordinary Symphony No. 5 highlights the second half of the program.

Marcia Gates
Principal flutist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic since 1986, Marcia studied music at the Eastman School of Music Preparatory Department and at Ithaca College. An active chamber musician in the Hudson Valley, she has appeared frequently as soloist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and with the Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra throughout its existence from 1982 to 1998. Marcia is also a longtime member of the Pone Ensemble for New Music, having been appointed by Gundaris Pone in the early years of the ensemble. She has performed with the Hudson Valley BachFest since 2000, its inaugural year. A highlight of her career was being selected by the renowned flutist Julius Baker as a soloist and first prize winner in his master classes.
Marcia is an active performer in the Hudson Valley, and is recorded on the Soundspells and Parnassus record labels. She has recorded a CD of music for flute and harp entitled “Angel’s Serenade.” Retired from teaching instrumental music for many years in the Hyde Park Central School District, Marcia lives in Gardiner, NY, with her husband Steve. They are proud parents and grandparents of three sons and four lively grandchildren.
